A CONVERSATION WITH PRODUCT DESIGN MANAGER MICHAEL TALBOT
DISCOVER THE UNEARTHED COLLECTION
An exploration of warmth through the subtle, tonal shades of nature’s palette. Balancing sophisticated style with natural elements, the Unearthed Collection results in remarkable beauty coursing through every detail. Today we are sitting with Product Design Manager, Michael Talbot, where he is going to shed some light on the inspiration behind this unparalleled collection and the three new colours-Coast, Storm, and Terra.
WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE UNEARTHED COLLECTION?
My main source of inspiration behind this collection was simply Nature itself. Within the industry there is a lot of focus on the fact that quartz slabs are engineered or manmade. What people often overlook is that fact that our quartz slabs are comprised of up to 93% natural quartz, which is extracted from the earth. While designing this collection I wanted to illustrate the beauty of nature and all of its unique characteristics. I didn’t want to create something that looked too perfect, that is where the texture comes into play. Capturing the essence of our planet through touch, this collection features our new Riverwashed finish, delivering a distinctive, natural texture. For me this collection is all about connecting with the Earth and bringing those rich textures and tones from the outdoors into our homes.

WHAT DOES YOUR DESIGN PROCESS LOOK LIKE?
My design process is always multi-faceted, and my approach is never the same. Design can be such a fickle creature. Sure, there are rules and elements of design, but in order to be truly “great” these rules must be broken. You cannot be afraid to go against the grain and push boundaries, and you must embrace the process in its entirety. Inspiration comes in many forms, and my design aesthetic is constantly evolving-as I change and grow as a person so does my design style.

WHAT DESIGN TRENDS ARE YOU SEEING RIGHT NOW?
Restorative Retreat. Our home is the one place we can escape the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives. The desire to create a calm space can be achieved through earthy tones and natural elements, evoking both an organic and serene ambiance. There has been a major shift from cool grey tones, to ones that have a warmer undertone. Terra, Coast, and Storm all have a subtle warmth to them making them a perfect complement to any colour palette. In the realm of interior design, we are seeing a rise in textured countertops and flooring. The unique Riverwashed finish is a perfect way to add some texture into your space, and can be easily incorporated into many different design aesthetics.

WHERE DO YOU SEE QUARTZ DESIGNS IN THE NEXT FEW YEARS?
Experimental. While nature will always play an integral in quartz, it is a material born of the earth, I believe we will see a departure from designs trying to closely mimic nature and an emergence of designs seeking nature as its foundation. I have countless thoughts running through my head, but only time will tell which of them will make it to fruition.
